Suggestion

A tailored verbal or mental input accepted by the unconscious mind and translated into feelings, sensations, or behavioral changes.

What is a Suggestion?

A suggestion is a targeted verbal, conceptual, or visual input offered to the mind. While waking consciousness continuously analyzes incoming statements for logical rigor, the focused state of hypnosis enables the unconscious mind to integrate suitable suggestions directly into emotions, bodily responses, and behavioral shifts.

Direct vs. Indirect Phrasing

Historically, suggestions were often delivered as direct commands ("You will now feel completely calm"). Contemporary clinical hypnotherapy prioritizes permissive phrasing and natural language patterns that respect individual autonomy.

Personal Perspective by Jan Mion (Hypnotherapist): "A suggestion lands best when it feels inherently right. This works exceptionally well using the client's own exact vocabulary, or structures that appeal directly to the unconscious—such as subtle rhymes or pseudo-plausibility ('Because X is happening, Y can follow', even if they are not strictly related).

Here, it operates much like successful advertising jingles and slogans that embed effortlessly in the mind (which is why advertisers use them). And, of course, permissive language ('Perhaps you might notice...', 'You may begin to feel...') allows suggestions to be integrated smoothly."

Why Permissive Phrasing Works

Permissive suggestions bypass the analytical guards of the conscious mind. Rather than creating pressure, they invite your unconscious mind to embrace positive change naturally.
