How It Works

How Hypnosis Stops the Allergic Overreaction

At its core, an allergy is an oversensitivity and a misfiring of the immune system. When the body responds to an allergen — grass pollen, tree blossom, or certain foods — with histamine, irritation, and sneezing, an unconsciously learned emergency program is running.

Your conscious mind knows perfectly well that pollen is harmless. But the autonomic nervous system has coupled contact with the substance to a defensive reaction. The more often the symptoms show up, the deeper that reflex digs in.

In trance, we work directly on that miscoupling. We signal to the unconscious that the allergen isn't a threat. Once the exaggerated defence stops firing, the histamine reaction and the mucous membranes settle down for good.

An allergy is the body's attempt to fight an enemy that was never one.

In Detail

Why Reason and Willpower Reach Their Limits With This Pattern

Do you suffer from the constant burden of an allergy — whether it's the yearly hay fever with sneezing and itchy eyes, sudden breathing trouble on contact with cat hair, or unpleasant skin reactions to certain foods? Many people feel significantly limited in their quality of life because of it, and look for a lasting solution. Hypnotherapy offers a gentle way not just to ease these complaints, but often to address them at the root — because we now know more than ever about the close connection between the psyche and the immune system, a field studied by psychoneuroimmunology, which we put to targeted use in hypnosis.

Why Hypnosis Can Work on the Immune System

In hypnotic trance, it's possible to communicate directly with the unconscious and offer soothing suggestions. That way, hypnosis for allergies can reduce symptoms, or even bring the allergy to a complete resolution. It's remarkable that treating allergies with hypnosis is still one of the lesser-known applications, even though the results speak for themselves.

The effectiveness has also been backed up by scientific studies. The best-known study on allergy therapy, conducted at the University of Bern, focused on self-hypnosis, but still impressively demonstrated the positive effect of hypnosis in allergy treatment. It isn't about blocking bodily functions with medication, but about looking at the body as a whole and activating its self-healing powers.

The answer to why this can work is found in how the immune system itself functions. Every day, it protects us from real threats like bacteria or viruses. Specialised cells called leukocytes (white blood cells) patrol the bloodstream for that purpose. As soon as they spot a supposed enemy, they sound the alarm, and a cascade of defence mechanisms kicks in. Part of that is the release of histamine by so-called mast cells — histamine widens the blood vessels so defence cells can reach the site faster. But that very widening of the vessels is also what causes watery eyes and a runny nose, complaints most allergy sufferers know all too well.

Where the Immune System Goes Off the Rails With Allergies

There are various theories about the worldwide rise in allergies like hay fever, pet allergies, dust mite allergies, or food allergies — the exact reasons aren't fully understood yet. What's clear is that in people with allergies, the immune system wrongly files harmless substances — the allergens — as dangerous enemies. This misjudgement, often carried along by specific antibodies like IgE, means the entire immune system gets mobilised to fight an intruder that was never one. It's a case of using cannons on sparrows, so to speak.

How intense the reaction gets depends on how threatening the immune system rates the substance — in extreme cases, up to a life-threatening anaphylactic shock, which can also affect the airways and trigger asthma. The immune system is really just trying to protect you; in its confusion over what's friend and what's foe, it ends up harming the body instead. And this faulty conditioning can even get stronger with repeated contact.

What Hypnosis Aims to Change With Allergies

The goal is deconditioning: getting the unconscious to file the allergen as what it actually is — harmless. Once that reassessment is anchored, the allergy can ease off or disappear completely. That doesn't only happen through hypnosis — sometimes allergies are also "outgrown" on their own, especially in childhood. Which shows: an allergy doesn't have to be a permanent companion.

If a full resolution isn't reachable right away, a noticeable easing of symptoms is often already an important first success — the allergen still gets recognised, but the reaction is much weaker because the perceived threat has dropped.

The immune system doesn't work in isolation — it's closely connected to the nervous system and the psyche. As far back as 1974, it was shown that the psyche has an influence on the immune system. Since hypnosis can demonstrably ease allergy symptoms, that suggests allergies have a psychological component too. Because the immune system is, among other things, responsible for the body's "border security," it makes sense that allergies sometimes also have something to do with how you handle your own boundaries. There's no single "the allergy" — every person and every reaction is different. That's why hypnotherapy for allergies is most successful when we look at you as a whole, rather than fixating on the individual symptom.

How a Treatment Unfolds

Hypnotherapy for allergies starts with a thorough initial conversation: the exact triggers, the pattern so far, possible emotional links. In the trance that follows, we work with individually tailored suggestions and images that help the unconscious re-evaluate the misguided immune response and accept the allergen as harmless. Sometimes that means working through a burdensome experience from the past. Sometimes it's about perceiving and protecting your own boundaries more clearly. How many sessions it takes depends on the nature and depth of the issue.

Stress is one of the most common amplifiers here: a relaxed body often reacts much more weakly to allergens, which is why relaxation work is a fixed part of the treatment.

Caution With Severe Allergies

When treating an allergy known to cause very severe reactions up to anaphylaxis, particular caution and experience on the therapist's part are needed. One example from the US shows that the purely hypnotic suggestion of an allergen — that is, vividly imagining it — can, in rare cases, trigger an allergic reaction. That's a reason for caution with severe allergies on one hand, but on the other, it's also striking proof of just how powerful the connection between mind and body really is.

I've been able to accompany many encouraging successes treating allergies — with cat allergies and other pet allergies, various pollen allergies, dust mite allergies, and food allergies. Sometimes a single session is already enough to feel noticeable relief — for instance, when a streaming nose suddenly stops running, or the itching eases. With hay fever especially, it's often worth booking the appointment during pollen season itself, so the effect can be checked directly against everyday life. It also happens that someone stops reacting to one substance after one or more sessions, but other allergies remain — the remaining reactions then usually need further sessions.

In Focus

The pollen isn't the problem. The immune system's misjudgement is.

The Change

What Spring Feels Like When Your Nose Stays Calm

Not dozing through the day on antihistamines. Sitting in the grass and enjoying the fresh air, without a tissue or a sneezing fit.

  • Being outside without constantly checking the pollen forecast
  • Breathing freely while the meadows around you are in bloom
  • No more burning eyes or constant itching in your throat
  • Sleep without a blocked nose and without medication side effects
Who It's For

Who Is This Suited For?

Especially suited to people with hay fever, pet allergies, or dust mite allergies who are tired of constantly fighting symptoms.

  • You suffer from hay fever every spring and don't want to take tablets all summer.
  • Your allergy has gotten worse over the years and reacts to more and more triggers.
  • You notice how stress and tension immediately make your allergic symptoms worse.
  • You want to teach your immune system to react normally and appropriately again.

If you're dealing with an acute, life-threatening anaphylactic shock, that's a medical emergency for the ER, not something for a hypnosis session.

    Arriving in trance
You lean back, and I guide you into a pleasant trance state. Your body relaxes deeply.
  3. 03
    Uncoupling the pattern
In trance, we introduce the allergen to your unconscious and overwrite the old histamine switchboard with a deep sense of safety.
  4. 04
Making sense of it and carrying it forward
You come back refreshed. We discuss the self-hypnosis technique for your next contact with pollen.

Serious Hypnosis

Serious Hypnotherapy for Allergies

What hypnosis can actually do for allergic complaints — and what's wishful thinking.

What People Say

Hypnosis makes allergic tissue immune from one second to the next.

Serious therapy

The immune system needs some time to put the changed signals into effect. It usually takes two to five sessions.

What People Say

You just have to believe hard enough, then the allergy is gone.

Serious therapy

Belief has nothing to do with it. This is about neural rewiring in the autonomic nervous system.

What People Say

Allergies are purely psychological.

Serious therapy

No. An allergy has real physical components — but the defensive reaction is steered through the nervous system.

What People Say

You have to stop your medication right away.

Serious therapy

Absolutely not. You only reduce medication in consultation with your doctor, once your body stays calm.

Will It Work for Me?

Merci beaucoup! 🐻✨

When my friend in Australia recommended online hypnotherapy sessions with Jan I was reluctant to try it. But I am very happy that I did take the leap, because it has helped me a lot. He is not as Swiss as you would expect a Swiss hypnotherapist to be, instead there is a lot of humour in his sessions that I did not expect. I am also glad he always graciously dealt with our timezone issues.

After many tires to find the best hypnotherapist for me I have finally found Jan Mion. He says his goal is that his clients are comfortably confused and I must say he does a great job of it. After every hypnosis appointment I felt that my subconsicous mind is fully working and implementing his suggestions. Visiting him in Zurich really is something I look forward to every time I am in town.

Good to Know

Hypnosis for Allergies & Hay Fever

Can hypnosis really help with hay fever?

Yes. Studies and practical experience show that regulating the autonomic nervous system can noticeably reduce histamine release and mucous membrane swelling.

Does hypnosis also work for pet allergies?

The principle is the same: the protein components in animal hair or saliva trigger an unwarranted overreaction, which can be uncoupled in trance.

How many sessions does it take for allergies?

Usually two to five sessions are enough to recalibrate the unconscious defensive reaction.

What does allergy hypnosis cost?

A session lasts about 60 minutes and costs 200 CHF.

Does hypnosis replace a medical allergy test?

No. A medical diagnosis makes sense, so we know exactly which substances your body reacts to.
