Hypnosis Preparation: Practical Checklist & Mindset

You don’t need special talent or belief for hypnosis to work. However, a few practical steps—from checking your headphones to visiting the restroom—and one central question about your goal will significantly enhance your session.

Essential Preparations for Your Appointment

Whether online or in-person, these simple points ensure you can fully relax for 60 minutes:

  • Use the restroom before starting—so your focus isn’t blocked by needing to pee for 60 minutes.
  • Plug in and test headphones properly—clear audio greatly helps you immerse into trance.
  • Choose a comfortable seated or lying position—make yourself cozy (never join from a standing desk!).
  • Eliminate distractions—silence your phone and inform family/roommates you need 60 minutes undisturbed.
  • Avoid heavy meals, alcohol, or recreational drugs before the session.

What Question You Should Ask Yourself Beforehand

Most people arrive wanting to "stop smoking" or "get rid of anxiety." They only think about moving away from the problem. But the subconscious mind does not simply give up a behavior it deems necessary without a replacement.

“What do I need to give you so you can do X?”

I often ask my clients: What resources do I need to give you to replace this habit? Before your session, think not just about what you want to lose, but what positive state or resource should take its place. Knowing your destination gives your subconscious a clear target.

Frequently Asked Questions About Preparation

Should I go to the restroom right before the session?

Yes, absolutely! It sounds simple, but a full bladder constantly distracts your focus during trance.

Do I need headphones for an online session?

Yes, comfortable headphones are recommended. Test ahead of time that they are properly connected.

Do I need to believe in hypnosis for it to work?

No. Hypnosis is a natural brain state. You don’t need belief—just a willingness to cooperate.

Should I sit or lie down?

Either is fine as long as you are comfortable and supported. Please never attempt a session at a standing desk.

What should I reflect on before the session?

Reflect on: What should replace the old habit or symptom? What state or resource do you want instead?
