Weight Loss Hypnosis

Lose weight without fighting against yourself.

You already know what you should be eating. The problem was never the knowledge — it's the moment around half past nine at night when someone else inside you takes over.

Weight-loss hypnosis doesn't work on your stomach or your metabolism — it works on the job food is doing for you: comfort, reward, winding down at night. It usually takes two to five sessions. I work online across Switzerland; each session runs about 60 minutes and costs CHF 200.

How it works

How hypnosis approaches weight loss

There's eating that satisfies hunger, and there's eating that does something else. That's what's usually called emotional eating, and for a lot of people, it's the real point. If you go to the fridge after a rough day, an argument, or four hours of feeling overwhelmed, you're not hungry — you have a feeling with nowhere else to go right now. And because sugar and fat genuinely bring quick relief, your unconscious learned something reasonable: this helps, right now. It means well by you. It just doesn't think in years.

That's why knowledge and willpower can't reach this spot. Your conscious mind decides on Monday morning. But the actual decision gets made on Tuesday evening, and by then it isn't the one driving. Once something is coupled — that feeling, that reach for the packet — it runs on its own. You only notice once it's empty. That's not a character flaw. It's a learned connection that works.

In trance, we talk to the part that eats instead of overriding it. We look at what job it's taken on, and what it could get instead. Because what was learned can be learned differently — and a part that's no longer needed hands its job over surprisingly willingly.

Food isn't the problem. It's the solution to a problem nobody ever talked about.

A closer look

Why the shortcuts don't hold up here

Nobody woke up one morning and was suddenly heavier. It crept in, over years, and like everything that creeps in, you don't quite know the reasons. That more went in than went out isn't an insight — you don't need a physicist or a hypnotherapist for that. The interesting question is a different one: what was it good for?

Food is doing a job

A client once told me about her evenings. Kids in bed, kitchen cleaned up, finally quiet — and then she'd sit on the sofa with the chocolate, honestly content for the first time all day. She didn't have an eating problem. She had a problem with the fact that nothing else was hers.

That's usually what it looks like. Food is responsible for something: for comfort, for reward, for the one moment when nobody wants anything from you. And because it does that job reliably, it gets called on again. That it only sends the bill later doesn't matter to the part of you doing the calling.

Why rules backfire

That's why diets work so badly. Not because you're too weak for them, but because they attack the wrong spot. They take away the comfort and give nothing back for it. What rises instead is tension, plain stress — and that's exactly what triggered this in the first place.

On top of that, strict control makes you think about food more, not less. Deprivation makes the forbidden thing more interesting, until eventually a bad day comes along and everything tips over. Shame follows, and shame is once again a feeling that food is responsible for handling. The circle closes.

A diet negotiates with your head over something your head was never deciding in the first place.

Why I don't believe in the hypnotic gastric band

There are colleagues out there who'll offer you a virtual gastric band, a hypnotic weight-loss injection, or suggestions aimed straight at your fat cells. I don't do that, for two reasons.

The first is the thing itself: the only proper study of the gastric band found no advantage over ordinary relaxation hypnosis. The second is more fundamental. Methods like that fight the symptom and leave the job undone. The part of you that needs comfort in the evening doesn't stop needing it just because your stomach is supposed to feel smaller. It finds another way in. And talking to fat cells is about as promising as emailing your liver.

What happens instead

We look for what the eating is responsible for, and hand that responsibility back to something better suited to carry it. Sometimes that's rest, sometimes self-respect, sometimes an old grief nobody ever talked about. Often it's simply habits that nobody ever consciously decided on.

What comes after that surprises most people. Not iron willpower, but a kind of indifference toward what used to pull at them. The packet sits there and stays quiet. One client told me after his third session that he hadn't even noticed he was losing weight — he'd just been puzzled why he no longer got up in the evening.

That's exactly how it should be. Not a fight that's won, but a fight that's stopped.

The change

What it's like when food is just food again

Not discipline that finally sticks. It's the point where the evening ends without the kitchen ever becoming an issue.

  • The evening ends without you getting up again
  • No counting, no plan, no guilty conscience
  • Sweets sit there and stay quiet
  • Stress goes somewhere other than the fridge
  • Looking in the mirror doesn't take an effort
Who it's for

Who is this suited for?

Almost everyone who comes to me for this already knows exactly what would be healthy. That's precisely why they're so angry at themselves.

  • You eat when you feel bad — and afterward you feel bad because of what you ate.
  • You've lost weight before, more than once, and gained it all back — usually a bit more than before.
  • Daytime goes fine, and then someone else takes over on the sofa in the evening.
  • You don't want another plan — you want to understand why none of them ever stick.

If your eating isn't doing an emotional job — if you eat calmly, not in secret, not out of frustration — hypnosis is the wrong lever here. Weight has many causes, and not every one sits in the mind. And if eating, purging, or starving are already out of control, that belongs in the territory of eating disorders.

In a session

What happens in a session

No scale, no meal plan, no homework.

Two to five sessions is the usual range here. We book one at a time — after the first, we both know more.

  1. 01
    What I need to know
I don't ask you what you eat, I ask when. What time of day it tips, in what mood, alone or around people. And how long it's been going on.
  2. 02
    Settling in
You lean back and I guide you into a calm, focused state. You stay awake and responsive the whole time. Many describe it as the moment right before falling asleep.
  3. 03
Negotiating with the part that eats
We go to the part of you that reaches for food and ask it what it's doing this for. Usually an answer comes up that you'd never have put into words yourself. Then we work on having it do its job differently.
  4. 04
Coming back and making sense of it
You come back slowly into the here and now, and we look together at what showed up. The real test is your next perfectly ordinary Tuesday evening.

Weight Loss Hypnosis Without Dieting — online or in the practice

With this issue, working online has an advantage almost no other issue has: the place where it happens is the same place where we work.

Online by video

A quiet room, a laptop or phone, headphones. Your kitchen is a few steps away, your sofa is exactly where it is every evening — that environment is the whole point. Working from there often gets you there faster. I work this way across all of Switzerland.

In person in Zurich

Two practices, Zurich Enge and Zurich Hottingen, both a few minutes from the train station. For this issue, some deliberately want to leave their own four walls, since home is also where everything tied to the pattern lives. That's a good reason.

Serious hypnosis

Serious hypnotherapy for weight loss

No topic gets sold as much nonsense as this one. So here's what actually happens in my practice.

What you hear

One session of hypnosis and you'll never crave sweets again.

Serious therapy

That's not how it works. We take away the job that food has taken on — that needs a few sessions and your involvement. If you're looking for a diet pill delivered in trance, you'll be disappointed.

What you hear

After hypnosis you just won't want anything sweet anymore – like you've been reprogrammed.

Serious therapy

Nothing gets programmed. Your unconscious filters out anything that doesn't fit you, and you're deciding along the whole time. We negotiate with the part that eats instead of overwriting it.

What you hear

The hypnotic gastric band gets you there faster.

Serious therapy

The only proper study of it found no advantage over ordinary relaxation hypnosis. I don't work with it — and not with suggestions aimed at fat cells or metabolism either, because that's not a language your unconscious understands.

What you hear

Five kilos in two weeks, then you're done.

Serious therapy

That's exactly the math that produces the yo-yo effect. I won't give you a pace or a number. We work on whatever reliably pulls you back otherwise.

Will it work for me?

How many hypnotherapy sessions for weight loss are typical?

In my experience as a hypnotherapist, the number of sessions depends on how long and how broadly emotional eating has been embedded in everyday life. These ranges are based on experience from my practice, not a guarantee of success.

Moves fast
2–3 sessions

If the pattern affects only one or two clearly identifiable situations and began only a few years ago, the range is often 2–3 sessions.

  • You can name the time of day and the mood
  • It affects one or two situations, not the whole day
  • It only started a few years ago
The typical case
3–4 sessions

A pattern that has grown over years, with food becoming both comfort and reward, tends to take 3–4 sessions in my experience.

  • You've been through several diets
  • Food has become comfort and reward at once
  • A lot runs on autopilot — you only notice afterward
When it sits deeper
5 or more

If eating has been linked since childhood to protection, self-image, or old grief, 5 or more sessions may be needed.

  • It's been with you since childhood
  • Your body is also a form of protection, and you know it
  • It's tied to grief that was never talked about

About Jan Mion

I'm a hypnotherapist, self-employed since 2015. On weight loss alone I've now got hundreds of sessions behind me, and my takeaway is twofold: it works, and it's more emotionally demanding than almost anyone expects. Hardly anyone shows up here with just an eating problem.

  • Hypnotherapist EZC
  • 1500+ hours of training
  • 5000+ individual sessions
  • In private practice since 2015

I've never met anyone who knew too little about nutrition. But plenty of people whose fridge gets opened by someone else in the evening.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions about weight-loss hypnosis

Can you really lose weight through hypnosis?

Yes, but not the way it's often sold. Hypnosis works on tension and on eating behaviour that comes from emotions — not on metabolism or fat cells.

Has anyone actually lost weight through hypnosis?

Yes, many people in my practice. What I hear most often isn't 'I eat less now' but 'I just don't think about it as much anymore.'

How many hypnosis sessions for weight loss?

Two to five sessions is the usual range. Where you land depends more on you than on the issue — I've seen both extremes with the exact same concern. We book one at a time, not as a package.

What does weight-loss hypnosis cost?

A session runs about 60 minutes and costs CHF 200. For two to five sessions, that's CHF 400 to CHF 1000.

Does the hypnotic gastric band work?

No, there's nothing to suggest it does. The only proper study of it found no advantage over ordinary relaxation hypnosis. I consider it symptom management and don't work with it.

Does health insurance cover weight-loss hypnosis?

As a rule, no. Basic insurance doesn't cover hypnosis, and only a few supplementary plans contribute. Assume you'll be covering the sessions yourself.

Do I have to go on a diet for this?

No, and I won't hand you a meal plan either. Strict control tends to fuel cravings rather than resolve them. What you eat usually changes on its own once food is relieved of its job.
