How it works

How hypnosis approaches Long Covid

The exhaustion in Long Covid is real, not imagined — confirmed among others by University Hospital Zurich and Switzerland's Federal Office of Public Health. Even so, many people affected report not being taken seriously about their symptoms. Whatever you see as the cause — the illness, the vaccine, or both — that's not what matters for our work together. What matters is that you're taken seriously.

Hypnosis cures no Long Covid. What it can do: bring the nervous system out of the permanent alarm state that's often still running months after the acute infection, and give the body back access to its own resources for recovery.

In England too, hypnotherapy has been used successfully to ease Long Covid symptoms. A cure can't be promised, but experience shows: quality of life can often improve substantially — even where other approaches have barely made a dent so far.

The big steps are often made of many small ones. And even a small step gives hope.

In detail

What Long Covid does to the nervous system

More and more people are affected by Long Covid symptoms. Many report not being taken seriously — often their symptoms get dismissed across the board as psychosomatic.

Is Long Covid really just psychosomatic?

The so-called post-COVID-19 condition is increasingly recognised, including by University Hospital Zurich (USZ) and Switzerland's Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). It stands to reason that post-COVID isn't purely psychosomatic, and that real physical changes are also helping to trigger the symptoms.

Some clients want to discuss with me whether their symptoms were triggered by the vaccine, the illness, or both. I've also been told it's all in someone's head. What I can say to that: everyone's entitled to think what they want about the causes. What matters to me is taking those affected seriously and finding a fitting solution.

What symptoms show up with Long Covid?

The long-term effects of a coronavirus infection show up in many forms. The most commonly reported are: fatigue, tiredness and exhaustion, limited resilience, reduced motivation, memory problems, pain, breathing problems, disturbances in smell and taste, coughing, concentration problems, "brain fog," tingling in the hands or feet, and dizziness.

Fatigue and reduced resilience are reported most often. Many people with Long Covid feel generally "foggy" — often accompanied by forgetfulness, low drive, and depressive moods. The physical symptoms vary just as much as the psychological ones, with the lungs and pain being the most commonly affected: shortness of breath or coughing can be found in some form in most of those affected. A post- or Long Covid condition is usually diagnosed when symptoms persist for more than three months after the acute infection — many people affected still haven't overcome their symptoms even after a year.

How exactly does hypnotherapy help with Long Covid?

Hypnotherapy has long been used successfully for physical and mental issues. Whether the symptoms are a direct late effect of the COVID illness or are being intensified by other causes often makes little difference to the work itself.

It's well known that hypnosis can trigger fundamental changes on a physical level: self-healing and the reduction of pain and other physical complaints can be stimulated, just like energy, motivation, and confidence. For many people affected, it's already a great relief just to hear that there's something they can actively do.

Medicine currently mostly aims, with medication, at containing the symptoms. As a hypnotherapist, I use hypnosis as a supportive, natural treatment option to align the body's resources toward healing. Even though the whole process can drag on for a long time: the big steps are often made of many small ones — and even a small step gives hope.

The change

What everyday life feels like once the permanent alarm eases

No promise of a cure. Just noticeably more energy, less fog in your head, a nervous system that can recover.

  • More energy for what actually matters
  • The brain fog lifts, concentration holds for longer
  • Better, more restorative sleep
  • A sense of being able to contribute something yourself again
Who it's for

Who is hypnosis for Long Covid suited for?

Hypnotherapy suits people living with Long Covid symptoms who want support alongside their care for exhaustion, sleep, or coping with the illness.

  • You have a Long Covid or Post-Covid diagnosis, or recognise yourself in the typical symptoms.
  • Exhaustion, brain fog, or pain dominate your everyday life, and recovery won't settle in.
  • You feel your symptoms aren't taken seriously, and you're looking for someone who takes you at your word.
  • You want to actively contribute something, even while medicine is mostly focused on containing symptoms.

Hypnosis doesn't replace medical assessment or treatment — it complements it. New or worsening symptoms belong in front of a doctor first. And as everywhere: hypnosis doesn't work against your own will.

In a session

How a Long Covid treatment unfolds

With Long Covid, I often plan sessions further apart — every two to four weeks. In between, regular self-hypnosis is an important part of the treatment.

  1. 01
    What limits you most
I don't ask about the diagnosis itself, but about what costs you the most in everyday life: the exhaustion, the sleep, the fog in your head.
  2. 02
    Powering down
You make yourself comfortable, and I guide you into a deep, gentle trance. Especially with limited resilience, this is often already the first real rest in a long time.
  3. 03
    Activating resources
We work with the part responsible for recovery and self-healing, and give it room again.
  4. 04
    Taking self-hypnosis with you
You get something you can use yourself between sessions — that carries especially much weight here.

Hypnosis for Long Covid — online or in the practice

Online is especially often the better choice with this issue.

Serious hypnosis

Serious hypnotherapy for Long Covid

Honest expectations instead of false hope.

What people say

Hypnosis can cure Long Covid.

Serious therapy

No, I don't promise that. What's realistic: an often substantial improvement in quality of life, even where little else has helped so far.

What people say

The symptoms are just psychosomatic, or all in your head.

Serious therapy

No. The exhaustion and other symptoms are real — confirmed among others by University Hospital Zurich and the Federal Office of Public Health. Hypnosis still plays a part, because the nervous system is always involved in recovery, regardless of the cause.

What people say

If I'm too exhausted, a session won't do anything anyway.

Serious therapy

Rather the opposite: especially with limited resilience, the deep rest of trance is often the first real recovery in a long time.

What people say

With such a new illness, hypnosis can't have any effect yet.

Serious therapy

Hypnosis doesn't work on the virus — it works on things that have long been well studied: exhaustion, pain processing, sleep, nervous system regulation.

Will it work for me?

What hypnosis can realistically change

Honestly: with Long Covid, a lot depends on how pronounced the physical component is — that's not always predictable in advance. What can be influenced more reliably is the side that runs through the nervous system: exhaustion, sleep, tension, pain processing.

Often goes quickly
2–3 sessions

The illness isn't too long ago, and resilience is largely there.

  • Exhaustion is noticeable, but everyday life still holds
  • A clear wish to actively contribute
  • Good sleep is still basically possible
The usual case
3–4 sessions, further apart

The symptoms have lasted several months and noticeably shape everyday life.

  • Fatigue and brain fog are a daily issue
  • Sleep and mood suffer along with it
  • Regular self-hypnosis between sessions matters
When more is layered in
5 or more, over a longer time

Symptoms have lasted over a year, with significant physical limitation.

  • Everyday life is strongly shaped by the exhaustion
  • Earlier treatment attempts have barely helped
  • Patience and a longer timeframe are part of the plan

My honest promise: Even though a cure can't be promised, I'll tell you honestly after the first session whether I have the impression that something can shift here.

Merci beaucoup! 🐻✨

When my friend in Australia recommended online hypnotherapy sessions with Jan I was reluctant to try it. But I am very happy that I did take the leap, because it has helped me a lot. He is not as Swiss as you would expect a Swiss hypnotherapist to be, instead there is a lot of humour in his sessions that I did not expect. I am also glad he always graciously dealt with our timezone issues.

After many tires to find the best hypnotherapist for me I have finally found Jan Mion. He says his goal is that his clients are comfortably confused and I must say he does a great job of it. After every hypnosis appointment I felt that my subconsicous mind is fully working and implementing his suggestions. Visiting him in Zurich really is something I look forward to every time I am in town.

A cure can't be promised. But hypnosis has proven effective at noticeably easing symptoms like fatigue, pain, and concentration problems, and at improving quality of life.

Through targeted suggestions and relaxation, hypnosis works on the autonomic nervous system: it can help calm it, reduce stress, influence pain perception, and improve energy management and concentration.

Yes, and that's often the better choice with this issue. Especially when mobility or resilience is limited, online sessions save exactly the energy that a commute would otherwise cost.

How many sessions does hypnosis for Long Covid take?

The usual range is two to five sessions, often spaced two to four weeks apart rather than weekly. In between, regular self-hypnosis is an important part of the treatment.

What does hypnotherapy for Long Covid cost?

A session lasts about 60 minutes and costs 200 CHF. We book each session individually.
