Does Insurance Pay For Hypnosis?

Does Insurance Pay For Hypnosis

If you have decided to undergo hypnosis or hypnotherapy, the question often arises as to whether health insurance companies pay for hypnosis. Since I get this question so often, I have inquired directly with Swiss health insurance providers and here is the updated list of whether health insurance pays for hypnotherapy:

Does basic insurance cover hypnosis?

Switzerland’s mandatory basic health insurance (KVG) generally does not cover the costs of hypnotherapy by independent therapists.

The only exception under basic insurance is if hypnosis is performed directly by medical doctors holding the recognized specialization/title “Medical Hypnosis SMSH/GHypS” billed via medical tariffs (as confirmed by Helsana), or by midwives applying hypnosis during childbirth preparation.

Without such medical qualifications or a matching supplementary plan, hypnotherapy is not reimbursed under basic insurance.

EMR / ASCA recognition

For supplementary insurance (VVG), many insurance companies rely on the EMR (Erfahrungsmedizinisches Register) for recognizing alternative therapies. The EMR excludes non-medical hypnotherapy as an independent method.

The ASCA (Foundation for Complementary Medicine), on the other hand, recognizes hypnotherapy. Insurers like Groupe Mutuel and rhenusana reference ASCA or EMR certification for therapeutic coverage in specific supplementary insurance plans (e.g. Groupe Mutuel’s Alterna, Global Smart, or Premium plans).

Conclusion Hypnosis Health Insurance Switzerland

In summary, hypnotherapy in Switzerland is covered by health insurance only in very limited cases. EGK contributes generously via its EGK-SUN supplementary plan. Groupe Mutuel and rhenusana offer partial coverage under select supplementary plans with ASCA/EMR accreditation for medical/therapeutic indications. Helsana covers hypnosis under basic insurance only when performed by doctors with the SMSH/GHypS qualification.

For all other insurance companies: expect to pay for sessions out-of-pocket.
