Can hypnosis erase feelings?

A person reflecting on their emotions and the concept of erasing feelings with hypnosis.

When you feel bad, or certain feelings plague you, or you’ve fallen in love where you’d rather not have, you might look for a way to get rid of them. Because often, certain feelings can also get in the way of everyday life and functioning at work.

Hypnosis basically also has a big influence on the world of the unconscious, and thus on the world of feelings. However, I have to say: No, hypnosis cannot erase feelings. At least not in the way many people imagine.

Feelings from a hypnotic perspective

Many people know that they have a subconscious or unconscious mind, but not exactly how it works. One of the most important differences between conscious and unconscious is that the unconscious does not communicate with words. That means we don’t hear voices in our head when it wants to tell us something, because it communicates with feelings. This also includes intuition, gut feeling, and instincts. These feelings, no matter how disturbing they are, are therefore the way our inner self tells us something. Many people know what it’s like to not listen to themselves and regret it later. It is exactly the same with other feelings.

So if we want to get rid of or erase our feelings, that means nothing other than wanting to silence our unconscious. And that is fundamentally impossible. Because if we don’t perceive feelings, that doesn’t mean they aren’t there, but simply that we don’t notice them. However, repressing feelings pushes the energy into other areas. This is how psychosomatic illnesses can develop, for example. And such problems are usually worse than the discomfort caused by unpleasant feelings.

This is how psychosomatic illnesses can develop, for example. And such problems are usually worse than the discomfort caused by unpleasant feelings.

So it is not only impossible to erase feelings, but also not a good idea.

First step: Acceptance

That means we have to deal with our feelings, for better or worse. However, that doesn’t mean they always have to stay that way. Because fundamentally, feelings are negative in order to communicate that something doesn’t fit. That something just doesn’t feel right. They point out that something is wrong with our environment or way of life. But it doesn’t mean that something is wrong with us. So if we use these negative messages to find out what we need to change, instead of wanting to ignore them, then we can improve our lives on a fundamental level.

Making Feelings Fit: Emotional Reframing & Desensitization

While hypnosis cannot delete feelings like pressing a backspace key, we can utilize trance for Emotional Reframing and Desensitization. What does that mean in practice?

When you recall a painful breakup, a loss, or a past humiliation, your brain couples that memory with an intense physical and emotional stress response. The memory itself isn’t the true problem — the emotional charge attached to it is.

In hypnotherapy, we separate the historical event from the exaggerated emotional reflex:

  • Desensitization: The subconscious processes the memory from a safe, deeply relaxed trance state. Your nervous system learns that the past danger is over, resolving heart palpitations and stomach tightness upon recall.
  • Emotional Reframing: The valuable life lesson and wisdom from the experience remain intact, but the paralyzing pain drops away. You keep the insight, but lose the suffering.

If you want to change your feelings, we redirect the troubling emotional energy into a resilient inner resource. This is far more effective and lasting than attempting to suppress emotions — because whatever you suppress inevitably returns stronger.

Conclusion

It is impossible to delete feelings with hypnosis as if deleting a file on a computer, because humans are not robots. But we can invite the subconscious mind to re-evaluate memories and process emotions in a healthier way. This makes it possible to release paralyzing emotional charges while developing a calm, empowered relationship with your past.
