Hypnosis

A state of focused attention characterized by heightened activity of the unconscious mind. A direct synonym for the state of hypnosis is hypnotic trance.

What is Hypnosis?

In modern hypnotherapy, the term hypnosis encompasses two distinct aspects: the internal state experienced by the person, and the external process of guidance.

A direct synonym for the state of hypnosis is hypnotic trance.

State vs. Process: Hypnosis and Hypnotizing

It is helpful to differentiate between the internal experience and the guidance method:

  • The State (Hypnotic Trance): The internal experience of the client. This state is defined by a heightened activity and responsiveness of the unconscious mind, while the critical filter of the conscious mind temporarily steps into the background. This state belongs entirely to the client.
  • The Process (Hypnotizing): The therapeutic communication and verbal guidance provided by the therapist. Hypnotizing is not "mind control," but a professional invitation and guidance to help the client access their own hypnotic trance effortlessly.

Personal Perspective by Jan Mion (Hypnotherapist): "Many people view hypnosis as external 'programming' like code written onto a robot. But human beings are not robots.

*The subconscious is also not an abstract psychological concept—in practice, it operates like 'the other you', an active layer of your mind with which you can have a good or bad relationship. When anxieties or blockages arise, it is usually a sign of a strained relationship with this part of yourself. Hypnosis doesn't program you; it restores your agency and re-opens direct collaboration with 'the other you'."*

Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnosis

  • Do you lose control during hypnosis? No. You remain aware of your surroundings and retain complete agency throughout the session.
  • Is hypnosis the same as sleep? No. While deeply relaxing, your mind remains alert, focused, and your unconscious mind is highly active.
  • Does online hypnosis work effectively? Yes. Being in your familiar home environment often makes it even easier to relax and immerse yourself in the process.
